Since Tuesday’s episode, there has been plenty of discussion about the significance of Dean only using one side of his bed, but it wasn’t the only thing that stood out to me in the opening scene.
Some of these things were subtle, some not so much, and so (because I’m a Level 10 Grand Master Procrastinator and have a million and one things I should have been doing instead) I decided to compare the shot from 9.14 with shots from earlier episodes to see exactly what had changed.
Am I glad I did? You bet your ass I am.
I agree with a lot of what this summary suggests. It doesn’t just illustrate the way Dean’s relationships have progressed now, but how they’ve always been. Everyone, I mean EVERYONE, Dean has ever cared about has bailed on him for one reason or another, let him down, or he pushed away for their sake. I don’t excuse the decisions he’s made this season (the fallout from getting the Mark of Cain won’t be pretty), but I understand, at least on some level, why he did them. Despite all the encouragements we’ve received considering his character growth, deep down, Dean really only knows how to do one thing, and that’s look after Sam. We’ve seen Sam strike out on his own before, and he’s been fine. He can shake off the hunter job easy. Dean’s lone attempt at a real life blew up in his face. He was like a fish out of water. He might long for peaceful times but as a soldier, he’d be lost without a war to fight. Regardless of where the season takes us from here, my sister and I believe that Dean’s ideal ending is where he should be the one to take the final blow to save Sam, and Castiel will bring him to heaven.
